Mid-year report

The financial year just ended and for us Australians, it’s meant a few things: busy times (including for me) finishing work required and donating money before the year-end, a change in Prime Minister (Kevin Rudd is back in) and now having to prepare our tax returns by the end of October deadline. In retail there are plenty of end-of-financial-year sales (including big toy sales) and stock clearance sales. I guess being in the middle of winter, it’s a good time to attract customers to shop. We also recently made a big purchase and bought our very own second-hand 2011 Nissan X-Trail and traded-in our Holden Commodore Acclaim. I’m enjoying driving our “new” car very much.

So now we’re in the middle of school holidays (winter break). It hasn’t been too bad having both children at home, but we’ve had a bit of the grumps after a busy first week. We’ve been catching up with a few family and friends and haven’t had much time to relax until this past weekend.

Nicholas finished his second term of year 1 on a pretty good note. He is on the quiet side at school. His performance is fine, but his best and favourite subject is Maths. His mid-year school report also said that “he regulates his behaviour well” which is another way of saying he saves up his emotions just for us.

He still enjoys arts and craft and music. Often he is either drawing, working on an art project or playing the ukelele, bongo drums or recorder. He can play the latter two pretty well. He’s also started enjoying word searches and playing Uno.

I think he’s grown again since we came back from America. He’s now 119 cm (3ft 10 in) tall and weighs 20 kg (40 lb). He lost his two top front teeth recently which has left him with a large gap in his smile. He’s still our sweet little boy and Catherine’s wonderful (and sometimes bossy) big brother. He peels mandarins for her and when they’re playing well together, he often praises her. He also tries to teach her to say different words and to show her how to ride her scooter. She’s made progress with both.

Our little girl is physically not so little anymore. She’s now 96 cm (3ft 1 in) tall and weights 14 kg (31 lb). It won’t be long until she reaches her brother’s size. She continues to entertain us with her big personality. She is so different to Nicholas in this way. She’s a very expressive, noisy and energetic 3-year-old. Recently at a children’s show, she was dancing, singing and clapping away while Nicholas sat still and just watched.

Her language has improved tremendously since her grommets were put in last year. The early intervention program in which she participates and her speech pathologist have also helped with her development. She’s progressing well, but still has a long way to go. A recent assessment has measured her to be about a year behind. She’ll continue with early intervention until she starts school. She thrives in this environment and enjoys the social interaction. Other good news is that she no longer has to see her pediatrician as he is happy with her progress.

Catherine’s hearing still seems to be ok. She’s scheduled for another hearing test next week. I, on the other hand, am going in for another round of grommets next month. I have fluid in my ears again and this time I’ll have the longer lasting (fingers’ crossed) ones put in.

Phil has been busy the past month with work and choir. He was acting director at work for a couple of weeks and just recently performed at another centenary concert. He’s caught a bug though and is currently trying to fight it. Winter illnesses haven’t been too bad in our house (touch wood), but still with another month and a half to go here’s hoping it doesn’t get any worse.

Finally, here are some photos of what we’ve been up to since our last post. We’ve had some really beautiful winter days enjoying the outdoors.
