Yay, it’s finally Friday! Once home after picking up Nicholas on a Friday afternoon, I actually feel relief and begin to relax for the weekend. There’s a lot of pressure in organising and preparing our family to be where we have to be by a certain time everyday. I’m sometimes paranoid that I’ll forget to pick up the kids as well. So after 5 weekdays of this, I just want to crash by the time Friday afternoon comes along.
Friday nights are usually the highlight of my week. It’s a little sad, but I look forward to being a couch potato after the kids go to bed and watching our DVD hire of the week. Tonight is a little different because Nicholas is away at Grandma and Grandad’s for the night (first time sine Catherine was born). It’s actually quite nice (and more quiet) having only one child in the house. I think Catherine is enjoying her one-on-one time with us as well.
Friday also means I’m kid-free in the morning for a few hours. It’s been eight weeks since this has started. I was hoping to do more walking on the days I had free, but the weather hasn’t been great. I’ve managed to keep myself active and busy anyway with boring household chores or catching up with a friend. I’ve also committed to help in Nicholas’ class every fortnight, including helping out a couple of times in the school canteen on the same day. Today I helped with reading with some kids followed by making nachos and packing lunches at the canteen. Last fortnight I met Nicholas’ class on their excursion to Questacon.
After a busy Friday morning, I pick up Catherine from school and she usually falls asleep in the car soon after. Since the time between picking her up and meeting Phil for lunch is short, I’ve just stayed with her in the car, reading and waiting until it’s time to meet Phil. First few times we just hung out at the CMHR carpark, but recently I’ve discovered it’s much nicer parking at one of the lookouts at the Arboretum which is on the way to Phil’s work. It’s a pleasant spot for reading in the car. Lunch with Phil is followed by picking up Nicholas from school which is the last run for the day.
The lead up to Friday is pretty much the same – many short drives. Thursdays Catherine and I usually have a playdate in the morning and then school for her in the afternoon. Thursdays also mean gymnastics for Nicholas after school and choir rehearsals for Phil in the evening. Wednesdays I work after dropping off Nicholas at his cousins’ place. Then I pick up dinner on the way home. Phil and Catherine go to ANU together on Wednesdays and Tuesdays. Phil does the rounds and pick-up on Wednesday and Tuesday evenings. I also work on Tuesdays after dropping off Nicholas at school. Mondays begin a bit more relaxed with playgroup in the morning for me and Catherine. I also go to yoga on Monday nights. So there you have it, our current routine. I’m so looking forward to school holidays in just one week.
