Nicholas had lots of fun celebrating his birthday. At his request, we outsourced the venue for the first time and had his party at Inflatable World in Kambah. This kids had a blast jumping, jousting, sliding and climbing. Phil and I were able to mostly relax with some other parents. We brought our own food and cake. He had a very rich mud cake from Costco of which only a quarter was consumed.
The next day was Nicholas’ birthday. He woke up to birthday presents and pancakes for breakfast. Spent the afternoon playing some Pokémon Go and baking chocolate chip cookies for his class. The evening ended with grandparents joining us for his requested dinner of chilli con carne and chocolate log. He was a happy boy.
At the end of the week, he finally flew on his own to Melbourne. He had been wanting to do this since he was nine. He can be quite adventurous when it comes to travel. I had so many feelings when he boarded the plane. I had to stay and watch the plane take off. It felt like a big part of me just left. I was also getting glimpses of the future of this happening again and again. On the other hand, I was filled with such pride and joy. It’s so great that Nicholas shares our curiosity and love of travel. He is growing up.
He was met by his uncle at the airport and later joined by his aunt and Phil. They all had a lovely weekend together. It was filled with visiting museums, riding public transport, eating yummy food, watching the footy, celebrating his birthday again and spending time with some of his favourite people.
Unfortunately, the flight back home was bumpy due to the storms. Luckily Phil was with Nicholas. He got quite airsick. Their flight arrived slightly early and Catherine and I greeted a relieved and tired looking Nicholas and Phil. Catherine really missed her big brother. It was so sweet when they ran to each other and gave each other a big hug.

Here's a throwback post from eleven years ago...
It's been a few months so I guess we're due for another entry. I’ve been meaning to write for awhile now, about the pregnancy, but that never happened. Let’s see how long I go with telling you about our days with Nicholas.
Boy has our life changed since our last entry. Believe it or not we’re still able to watch our favorite shows like American Idol. The only difference now is that a crying baby may interrupt and need attention or we’re multitasking by feeding the baby during the show. We also seem to be watching more movies (DVDs) than before the baby. I guess we’re even more homebodies than before. By the way, the last movie we saw, The Constant Gardener, we highly recommend.
We had a rough start when Nicholas arrived. The adjustment was challenging and still is from time to time. It’s definitely a sharp learning curve when starting a new family. It’s hard and easy at the same time. We’re enjoying it very much though. Nicholas is such a blessing.
At six weeks, he does seem to be crying a little less. He no longer cries when we change his diaper, but he still does when he has a bath. He has increasingly more calm and alert periods. His favorite pastime at the moment seems to be “chatting” or chilling with his giraffes on his bouncy seat. He’s started to coo and gurgle the past couple of weeks too. It’s so cute when he does. He also stares at things for quite awhile. We established awhile ago that his favorite pattern is stripes. He often stares at stripes. So if you ever come for a visit, wear stripes and he’ll like you instantly. 😊
