Today was a travel day and took a train from King’s Cross to York. We bought lunch for the train at the station prior to waiting for our platform to show up on the screen. The train was packed train and by the time we found our carriage, there was no luggage space in the main area. Luckly we found a last-minute spot between the seats. There was wifi on the train which made the kids happy. For nearly 2 hours, we passed beautiful green countryside. York is a pretty town. It’s still surrounded by the city wall with the river Ouse running through and from a distance you can see the Minster on the hill. We arrived at our hotel early but we couldn’t check in. We left our bags and eventually coaxed the kids (mainly Catherine) to walk to the National Railway Museum. Catherine wasn’t interested at first but after getting some food into her she was engaged. We saw a demonstration of the train turntable and saw a lot of cool trains on display. Back at our hotel, we were given a room with a nice view and which felt neater than London. We found mediocre dinner at a Chinese restaurant nearby. The lack of Asian patrons should’ve given us a clue. We later discovered that the area was York’s mini-Chinatown.

We had cooked breakfast at our hotel! There was bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms plus continental breakfast choices. We explored the city today. The first stop was Clifford’s Tower to admire the view but we didn’t go inside. We walked to York Minster from there via the prettiest Starbucks we’ve ever set foot in. It was in an old bank building. We walked to the Shambles and found lots of quaint shops, including a sweet shop where Phil bought lollies that brought him back to his childhood. The kids enjoyed them too. Before going into York Minster we decided to get some lunch from a chain bakery, Cooplands. We had various pastries for lunch and I had a most delicious lemon tart. The Minster was as impressive and amazing as it looked from the outside. Phil and I especially liked the Chapter House. Nicholas appreciated the place more than Catherine – she ended up sleeping in the pew. The kids had had enough that afternoon, so we went back to the hotel. I went back out by myself and went shopping at The Gap. Then I tagged team Phil and he went out for a short explore by himself. We had a pretty good fish and chips dinner at a place across the street. We were able to convince the kids to go for a walk along the wall. Phil had to leave us shortly after to attend a choral concert. The Sixteen, a renowned UK-based choir, were performing at the remarkable Minster. It was a most memorable concert for him. Meanwhile, the kids and I had a lovely walk back to the hotel via the city wall. We encountered a few joggers and light showers along the way.
