We left Friday late afternoon and arrived Thredbo at night after a brief stop at Cooma for dinner. We stayed in a cosy Airbnb loft cabin called La Neige Cedar. We had a beautiful view to wake up to each morning. We could also see the chairlift and mountain bikers racing down the mountain from our window.
On Saturday we explored the village and surrounds before the wedding ceremony took place. We ran into a few of Phil’s colleagues, had some morning tea from the Thredbo bakery and then did a few rounds on the Alpine Bobsled. Lunch was from Thredbo bakery again and then it was back to our cabin to get ready for the wedding. The meeting place was at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel bar. As a group we walked down to the scenic golf course for the wedding. It was a lovely ceremony.
The kids were not entirely comfortable during the ceremony. Catherine had shoes that no longer fit her properly so most of the way she was walking without them. I ran off to get her sneakers from our cabin when the group went back to the bar for dinner pre-drinks. The kids were much happier indoors sitting around the fireplace among the guests. Due to Covid group restrictions, children were not invited to the dinner reception so Nicholas, Catherine and I went back to the cabin and ordered takeaway dinner from the burger joint next door. To my surprise, they wanted to go back after dinner and join the party again. They both were on the dance floor more than their parents! It was so great to see them enjoying themselves. Catherine also made a friend with one of Phil’s colleagues’ daughters. It almost felt normal again seeing people dancing and socialising.
The next morning, we did a quick walk along Thredbo river and then checked out of our cabin. After catching up with colleagues and the hosts at the recovery drinks, we drove back to Canberra via a lunch stop in Cooma on Sunday.
The following weekend we were off again, this time to Sydney for our belated Christmas gathering with friends. It was the Canberra Day long weekend, so we drove out on Saturday and came back on Monday. We finally saw our Sydney friends after over a year since our last get together. It was so good to catch up and spend time with all of them. After driving out to Epping for the party and gift exchange, we drove into the CBD where we stayed the next two nights at Rydges World Square. We opted for a cosy hotel room this time. The beds were very comfortable. We also had room credit which we used for room service breakfast on our last morning. The rest of the weekend was eating with friends. I had a delicious and filling breakfast at Auvers Café at Darling Square. For lunch we had Lilong (Chinese food) with friends, followed by gelato from Gelato Messina. A generous friend also bought us some Kurtosh (chimney cake) for us to bring home. We had Japanese takeaway our first night and then pancakes at Pancakes on the Rocks the second night. I also got my Starbucks fix that weekend. We also convinced the kids to go on a quick scenic outing to La Perouse. It was a hot day so we didn’t stay out too long but it was good to see the water before going back to land-locked Canberra.
