Merimbula

We just spent a few lovely days at the coast. It was wonderful and a bit sad at the same time. It’s been feeling like the end of an era lately with both kids graduating and having stayed the last time at the house in Merimbula. It had been a while (2 years) since we were last there and it was a good place to be after finishing off school and work for the year.

We left Canberra in the early afternoon on a Sunday. Nicholas drove from home all the way to Nimmitabel with a stop at the Christmas Barn in Bredbo. He did really well and I was so impressed. I think we all thought it was a bit surreal with Nicholas being the driver on our family road trip we’ve travelled almost every year. Phil drove the second half of the trip and I was back in the front passenger seat. It was a pleasant driving listening to a This American Life podcast while the kids sat in the back listening to their own music.

Once at Merimbula, we noticed quite a few things changed around town and around the house. Even our routine was different. The kids slept in every morning (finally!). Gone are the days we had early mornings and would find them awake in the lounge room with toys scattered everywhere. I had lovely quiet mornings by myself with only the sound of bell birds in the distance and basking in the warm rays of sun filling up the room.

We visited the beach every day and played board/card games every night (while watching the cricket). We had a great time at our favourite spot, Pambula Beach, paddling in the water, making sand castles, playing beach cricket and walking to the rock pool. The last morning we stopped at Bar Beach for morning tea and people and wave watching before going home. It was a relaxing few days. Nicholas surprised us again and drove all the way home back to Canberra.
