It’s been nearly two weeks since we got back from Adelaide and it already seems like a distant memory. Phil and I have returned to work and are currently juggling school holiday activities with the kids. It’s been tricky trying to keep them occupied enough and not overtiring everyone.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we decided to book a trip to Adelaide. I received mixed reactions when I told people our plan for the summer holidays. Everyone said it would be hot. The images I saw of the Adelaide skyline didn’t look too exciting either, so my expectations weren’t too high. With the exception of Phil, it was a new place for all of us to visit.
Our week in Adelaide did not disappoint. We were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and do. It’s very family friendly, there’s good public transport and the city centre is not too far from the beach or the hills. It’s a big city, but not as busy as Sydney and Melbourne. The city centre is surrounded by beautiful gardens and filled with charming old buildings. We loved it. We were very lucky with the weather too. First two days were over 30 degrees Celsius and then it dropped to the low 20s. There were also showers and rain some days.
We met up with my mom in Adelaide and we stayed at the Mantra on Frome St, which was a convenient spot. We walked to the museum, Rundle Mall, Elder Park for the New Year’s Eve fireworks, Zoo, Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Oval, Festival Theatre, Central Market and the gallery. When we hired a car for two days, we drove to Victor Habor, Brighton Beach and Adelaide Hills. Fun fact: Nicholas and Catherine's great great great grandfather was the foreman of the construction of the causeway between Victor Harbor and Granite Island.
My mom and I went to see the musical South Pacific at the Festival Theatre. It was an enjoyable show and nice to do something my mom and I used to enjoy doing in L.A. The next night all of us had a fun time watching a cricket game at the newly renovated Adelaide Oval. It was the T20 Big Bash League, Adelaide Strikers versus Sydney Sixers. Unfortunately, the home team lost.
We had some nice food, especially fresh and delicious seafood platters and our best meal was a huge German sausage platter with sauerkraut, a pretzel and apple strudel in Hahndorf. Next to Adelaide Central market, we found a sizeable Asian food court with plenty of selection and ate Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and vegan food among hundreds of other people. It was great.
We were certainly impressed with Adelaide and look forward to visiting again!
